Hi Guy’s and Gal’s,

I need a little help. I have been considering being a driver for several months. But have thought of becoming a driver since I was young. I have a friend that’s a truck driver and I have gone with him on several trips-western region. I feel in love-with trucking-when we went to Glamis, 4x4ing on a Military base in a convoy!!! Holly Cr*p!! Where or what job would give you that type of experience???!!! I couldn’t stop smiling for days.

Here are some personal facts that might help me get the answers I need to make the right choose of school/company to go to.

I have no under age children. I am not married, no home and haven’t worked in 2 years.

Please give some advise and ideas of the questions I need to ask recruiters.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Ms. Tomboy, welcome to TT. I am in the process of applying myself so l really cannot answer your question. You could also try posting on the general forum where you are likely to get more answers. Good luck!

Hi Guy’s and Gal’s,

I myself am working towards classes and finding the right company. So far the only concern I have for you, regarding questions, is most companies want minimum of two or three years recent employment history.

As to your current lifestyle "no children, not married, no home" would seem to make this career the perfect fit. I suppose you could skip one question about home time.

Also it seems most companies want minimal 160 hour schooling/training and need to ensure they are accredited in your state.

Another thought is maybe getting your CDL permit on your own prior to attending classes. Personally one local school here has dropped the tuition by $1,000.00 and shaved 40 hours off of my needed class time. The permit cost me $15.00, the DOT physical cost another $85.00, saving me $900.00! You can prep for your CDL here and it is an awesome teaching tool Bret has put together. Lot's of companies will reimburse you your tuition costs as well over time, making this a win-win situation.

Wish you luck.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
