Where should I go with no experience? Is there anywhere in PA that would be able to have me home weekly?

Well, with a user name like yours, sounds like you're already aware of LTL as an option. Being in Shippensburg, you are within a reasonable commute to Carlisle, PA. Carlisle is a trucking mecca. You have Old Dominion, ABF, YRC, and UPSF to name a few LTLs. Any one of those will take you on without experience. Some might require your CDL A first.

I recommend becoming a linehaul driver for OD. You can get paid in their CDL A program while you earn your license, around $20 an hour, and then have one of the best paying trucking jobs you could want. They'll more than likely start you as a bag wild driver, meaning you'll be out a week at a time ( if you hire on as a linehaul driver ), but you'll layover in hotels. Being home every day shouldn't take long to achieve, if that's what you'd be interested in.

Of course, if you're looking for truckload companies, there are plenty of those ...

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

Linehaul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I actually just got my license... I just don't find myself being a good fit at YRC... OD actually intimidates me a little bit because of the stories I have heard... Heard anything good about Baylor or Knight?

Curious why OD intimidates you? They have a good reputation.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

A few people I work with and a few close friends of mine had worked on the dock over there, they claim it's a horrible place. I suppose I'm worried about making a change and not having the Union to back me over minor stupid things.
