Hi there: I'll try to keep this brief as I can. I'm a former government employee, retired since 1997. I worked for a temp agency from about 1999 to 2000. Then, worked for JFK International from 2001 to 2003. I got laid off and figured I could do better on my own. My mom got sick in 2006 and I became primary care-taker. She passed away last year. None of my business attempt have been successful. So, the big question: I'll be 66 on the 22nd of this month. I haven't worked a regular job since I was laid off in 2003. I don't have a criminal background. My driving record is excellent...but...I haven't driven a car in about 4 years. I am an honest man who's just had a few rough patches over the years. Is it too late to start truckin', or should I just hit the couch and watch "Judge Judy"? I'd really appreciate any feedback. Thanks, in advance.
Reginald B. (P.S: Judge Judy's ok but she don't pay my rent)
Reginald, when I got hired for my first trucking job at age 53, there was another gentleman there who was twenty years older than me that got hired the same week. Since then I have met two guys in their eighties who are still driving big trucks. If you can meet the demands of the job, and pass the physical, you're in!
I'd say go for it. I'm almost 63 and started training in January. I've been teaming with my son since March. We run hard but I haven't found anything I can't handle. Remember, too, there are lots of driving jobs besides OTR if you find that's not your forte.
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
Thanks David L and Old School for the encouragement. Really appreciate it.
