A friend of mine wants to restart his trucking career by going to school again. He got his CDL A 2010, but he hasn't driven since then. All the companies require him to go back to school and complete a certain amount of hours of instruction and behind the wheel.

That is why he wants to turn in his CDL A and convert into a regular Class C Driver's License.

He is Texas resident and already decided for a truck driving school.

Questions:

1. Is it possible to convert the CDL A into a Class C driver's license? 2. If yes, how is it done? 3. How much does it usually cost to convert the CDL into a regular driver's license? 4. Are there any things he should be aware of?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

There's no reason for him to do that. He's fine with his current CDL. He just needs to take what is referred to as a "refresher course" to sharpen up his skills after a long time away from driving trucks.

The way to approach it is to have him apply for jobs at trucking companies he's interested in. They'll review his background and let him know what they would require him to do to become eligible for hire. They'll usually say the refresher course has to be a certain number of hours and often times they'll specify what schools in his area they consider acceptable. He goes to school, gets the refresher course out of the way, and on to work he goes.

But make sure he finds a company willing to hire him before committing to taking a refresher anywhere. Not all courses and schools are the same. Trucking companies usually have their own criteria he'll have to meet. You would hate for him to put in the time and money to take a course and then find out nobody is willing to hire him afterward.

We have an excellent listing of truck driving jobs with a new feature that allows you to Apply For Multiple Truck Driving Jobs With One Application. Saves a ton of time and it's really convenient. Just type in your zip code, choose the companies you want to apply to, and fill out the app. Simple as that.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
