Hey everyone! I am looking into getting my class a cdl and would like some advice on the schools in my area if anyone knows about them. I live in Sherman tx so the closets one is Grayson community college but there are a few in the Dallas area so any advice on the schools would be most helpful!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

It's entirely possible that someone here has gone to one of the schools in your area and hopefully they'll chime in. I'm not familiar with those schools myself but we have some excellent resources that will help you out quite a bit.

We have our Truck Driver's Career Guide which has a section dedicated to choosing a truck driving school. We also have a series of articles that talk about How To Choose A School.

I highly recommend going through our truck driver's career guide beginning to end and following all of the links. There's a ton of knowledge packed in there to help you get your career off to a great start.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
