Thanks to the powers that be here at TruckingTruth...quite a refreshing experience. 47 and making a transition from business to business sales right up into the trucking world. I am diving into the deep end (which I've done all of my life while hitting my head quite frequently) and going flatbed with Maverick Transportation. Applied at and accepted to all of the companies that offer CDL schooling...Maverick is hard to beat, but it is not for the impatient. I completed my app on the 20th of April and, while putting everybody else on hold, finally got the invite last week. Again thanks for cutting out all of bs and being a valuable resource for anyone interested in the trucking business.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hey Todd, congrats on the invite from Maverick!

Getting started in trucking takes a world of patience. These bigger companies have a lot of moving parts and there are so many regulations it's crazy. You just have to stick with the process and see it through.

When do you start?

Thanks Brett...I start on the 5th of July. Orientation the first week then off to their company sponsored school in Newport, Arkansas. The program is new and they only accept twelve each month...I'm excited and a bit nervous. Regulations...wow, I feel like I should have some kind of top secret clearance after going through the application process/background checks ect.
