How Can Truckers Protect Themselves From Being Attacked On The Road? Article by Rainy

I agree with Rainy, rest stops are dangerous. Especially just after the State Police Trooper patrol has driven through and is on down the road.

Automation and the future of trucking

Someone may have stated this already, but I usually compare it to aircraft. Besides takeoff and landing, they are basically computer-driven, yet they still have two pilots.

That statement is an oversimplification of a very complicated human/computer/mechanical process.

There are already proposals for pilotless cargo aircraft.

However, the military drones in the mid-east are flown by pilots on the ground here in the USA. So don't be surprised if you see driverless trucks on the road a lot sooner than than any of us expect. They could be "controlled" by a roomful of people sitting at CPU's.

Prime CDL Training - Springfield, MO

Jason,

Stay out of this lease driver/company spat. You have sided with the driver when he is not telling you the entire story. This is the same as buying into the terminal rat venom, IMO, and can only be detrimental to your progress as a driver trainee. Attitude is a big part of success as a student. If you have the attitude that the company is the villain you will build mental barriers that obstruct positive learning processes. If the trainer insists on venting to you, answer, "Yes Sir, No Sir" and don't let influence you against the company. Keep and open mind and positive attitude.

Troopers force truckers to climb on top of trailers during snow removal enforcement blitz.

Most Fixed Base Operators offer plain hot water or a hot 50/50 water glycol mix for aircraft snow/ice removal. The various anti-icing fluids are then applied to prevent snow/ice accumulation during taxi and the early part of take off and climb out. An airport type bucket truck w/water heater would be perfect for snow/ice removal from the tops of trailers. It would be expensive and there would need to be a dedicated area with an adequate grate drainage system. Otherwise the area would become an ice 'ockey rink after the first use. Plain hot water would probably not require treatment before going into the waste water system. This is a winter business opportunity for a pressure washing outfit...

Brakes

Jamie,

As OS mentioned, a 'caging bolt' can be inserted in that hole and used to disable the spring brake for that end of the axle. It is to be used at all brake chambers when towing a tractor or trailer to totally release the brakes. It could be used to disable one brake to allow one to limp to a repair facility... probably illegal as can be.

We used a grain trailer on the farm with one spring brake disabled for several runs to the elevator, until we got a new (used) brake chamber. Things were different in days gone by...

Another Blood Pressure Question

Gerald W,

I can't answer your question either, but I now have questions of my own.

I take 5 mg Lisinopril daily. The Doc did not warn me about not driving. However, the sheet that came with the script says, "Avoid driving and doing other tasks or actions that call for you to be alert until you see how this drug affects you." It also cautions about feeling dizzy or passing out. LOL. Well, I have not had any unusual symptoms. But, I am going to guess that these possible side effects will disqualify me for the DOT physical.

Thanks for starting this topic, GW, otherwise I would not have thought about reading the information sheet. Definitely going to talk to my Doc about this drug. In the past I have been able to keep my BP normal with exercise and a careful diet. Think I'll start that again.
