Before you plan to go work for Prime make sure you don’t have sleep apnea first! If you are currently employed with another company and have health insurance get tested before leaving. It will be a lot cheaper that way. Don’t worry if you fail it. Prime informed me that if I fail the test I will have to be compliant on my CPAP for 30 days before I can start. I have heard that other companies are making drivers do a sleep test as part of the hiring process as well.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

Michael, someone can correct me if I am wrong, and I certainly don't claim to have the last word on the ever changing regulations in this business, but I believe this scenario would be true no matter where you start. Monitoring and continual verification of the CPAP use is a federal regulation, and I think they must have thirty days of verified usage to let you start your driving career. I am fairly certain this would apply to any company, not just Prime.

So is a federal thing not a Prime thing. I am just glad i found out about it before i quite my current job. I think it would have cost me $600 at prime and if i failed i would be stuck without a paycheck for 30 days lol.

Article is old but should be useful information. There are plenty of company's hiring. BMI tests are administer per company by request not required.

Consider it a blessing Prime gave you a hurdle so you can have second thoughts about being their employee.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I don't have any issues with it. I simply wanted to alert those who are thinking about coming into the truck driving business. To be honest it is a good idea to test drivers for this. There is nothing more dangerous than a tired driver.

You should read the bottom of the article. Read what the real people dealing with this are thinking. BMI tests are not a requirement of passing a DOT physical. I am 80 pounds off and if thats the case I am done with trucking. Reason why drivers sleep behind the wheel is because they don't sleep on purpose. The big time accidents Tracy Morgan in new jersey and Fed EX that killed 10 people in California were caused by skinny drivers.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
