My wife and I combine at 34000 which is why we have been looking at going this route out of school got hired doing for a mom and pop shop then ever since the economy went bad they just have not been able to afford to give raised.

I'd be happy at 30k as long as there was opportunity to make more.

Doc contributes:

I've worked my ass off for 12 years in management and never made more than 35k.

Before I started my CDL school I interviewed to manage a second hand store (Salvation Army, Goodwill style) as large as a supermarket. The boss said the Store Manager makes $32,000 plus bonus. I know that's in line for a basic retail store.

Glad I started driving. I think I'm heading for around $40K here. And realistically the hours are about the same.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I figure next year,I should make 60k. The unpaid time is what hurts. 24-7,365 in a truck, for 60k? It seems at my age,(50), Its much harder,to find local work. I have a home and mortgage,so I need steady employment...just what trucking offers. Im willing to work hard and long..just wish the pay was a little better.
