I might have some DMV violations in other states in the distant past 10-20+ years. Will these exterminate my new driving career before it gets started and how can I check my own DMV records before beginning driving school training? Thanks in advance for any useful info.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Hey Bruce. As far as I know you'll have to contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles and request a copy of your driving record and you'll have to do the same for any states in question.

Generally speaking, DUI's will stay on your record and so may more serious violations like reckless driving (more than 15 mph over the limit). But most states have a limit of 3 to 5 years and then most tickets drop off the record. These are state by state policies so you'll have to check with the individual states to see what your driving record shows.

As Brett stated above, it is a state by state policy as to how long tickets stay on your record. I had the same concerns you had with DUI's from 32 years ago in Virginia and Kentucky. In Virginia tickets stay on your record for 11 years, and 5 in Kentucky. My motor vehicle report/driving record is clean in both states after checking with them. It is very easy to do and can be done over the phone or internet. Now I am waiting for my police report to come back to see if those tickets are on there before moving forward with CDL school.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Its real simple to get a DMV report. Just go to your local DMV and ask for your 10 year record. It will cost somewhere between $8.00 and $15.00.

I have lived in VA for the last 28 years, other than having my license suspended for not turning in a set of license plates, never had a problem. At the time did not realize I needed to turn them in, so my license was suspended for several months before I knew about it. That was back 15 or more years ago. Was able to explain the reason without any difficulties when I did my training with Prime.
