Hello everyone, I'm still gathering information to make sure I have everything covered before I dive into this. I read a lot about people who get turned down because of their BMI rating. Can anyone tell me what the minimum requirement to NOT have to take the "sleep apnea" test? My current BMI is about 30.3. I have a thousand more questions for different issues related to my current situation. Thanks for any comments, opinions and advice.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

They may measure your neck, if it's 17" or over, you will probably have to get tested or the may give you a Questionare asking questions like do you fall asleep watching a movie, ect, do some research on sleep apnea to learn the right/wrong answers

We have a ton of information about Sleep Apnea in our wiki, including symptons, risks, FMCSA policies, and a BMI calculator.

We have information about all aspects of the DOT physical in our wiki also.

We also have a ton of forum conversations about sleep apnea and conversations about the DOT physical so check those out also.

Last I knew Prime had a BMI limit of 39. Anything at or above 39 and you'll need to take a sleep apnea test. This is a company policy so other companies will have their own testing policies.
