So I am going down this hill between 55 and 60 m.p.h., when I spot this D.O.T. SUV. What do I do? Slow down. What does DOT do? Follow me for part of the route. He didn't pull me over. He just followed me for what seemed like an eternity.

Dave

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Well Dave, he knows you are a grain hauler, so he was pretty sure you were over weight, or you are gonna be speeding. He was probably just waiting for you to start speeding so he could pull you over. You did good, you stayed within the speed limit. Great job man! You averted a disaster.

Right now I've been hauling logs till I start at Melton so I understand how it can be with the D.O.T. First time I ever hauled a load of sweet gum I had no idea how heavy that stuff is. So I just let the loader operator fill the racks just about to the top. D.O.T. caught us a mile from the sawmill, I weighed in at 105,000 and change. embarrassed.gif

Couple weeks later he saw me again and I was full to the top, but this time I was carrying ash which is super light. He figured he was gonna get me again but I came in a 82,000. Down here if you have a harvest permit you're allowed up to 84,000. He was awfully surprised at that till I explained the different wood type.

In Iowa, in October, we are allowed up to 89,000 (grain haulers) as long as we stay off the Interstate.

I definitely was NOT on the Interstate. But, I have been over 80,000 gross a few times.

Dave

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

My brother drives for a small outfit in Nebraska. They haul grain this time of year in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. His boss came out of a field weighing 96,000 when he crossed a scale. They were going to give him a $4,300 fine. He said to them, Hey, there aren't any scales in that field! They knocked the fine down to $1,700. They just want enough to wet their beak, I reckon.
