Hello All:

This might seem like a stupid question but when I was trucking over 20 years ago I can't ever remember taking a vacation. Since I was on my own and wandering the country it didn't even matter to me then. But now things are a bit different. I have seen some hiring ads that say some companies do offer vacation time for their drivers. Do any of you know some companies that do that??? Thanks in advance.

Schneider, Swift, Prime offer 1 week paid vacation after first anniversary. Although I haven't verified this, I would be surprised if any of the major carriers, TL & LTL didn't offer vacation.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

Old Dominion offers 2 weeks paid vacation with 2 all purpose days ( 12 total days, 9 hours paid wages per day) after 1 year. 3 weeks around 5 years. 4 weeks close to 10 years.

Prime's is graduated too. 1 week earned every 125,000 miles. Starting at 750,000 miles it's 2 weeks earned every 125,000 miles. 3 weeks every 125,000 miles starting at 1,500,000 miles. Starts at $500 and then moves to $600 paid for the week pretty quickly.

125,000 miles is about how much you will drive as a company driver at Prime in a year, assuming staying out 4 weeks at a time. Some guys a bit more, some a bit less.

Thanks for the information guys. It is very much appreciated. The large companies are looking better.

I think Navajo is about the same. One week after a year.

Some companies such as Schneider and Prime have this info listed on their website. If you do a Google search for "Schneider Trucking vacation time" it will return a link to their benefits page. You can try this same thing with any company you have in mind. If they have that info listed on their website it will work.

I worked for Prime and Sygma, and both companies allowed me to take my vacation pay with out taking the time off.
