Actually, I don't work for them yet... So I'm sure I cant get the bonus. It would sure be nice though. LOL When do you plan on starting with them? I'm guessing I will start with Schneider sometime in Feb. I'm leaning toward getting my CDL local, stating on Jan 4th.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

This was the response I received from Schneider

Thank you for your interest in Schneider! In response to your question, Schneider unfortunately does not have any company-sponsored training anymore. The academies were closed in 2009. Schneider does offer tuition reimbursement of up to $6,000 if you attend an accredited Truck Driving School and are hired on by Schneider within one year of completing the program.

If you do have any questions, feel free to call!

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

I called them and they told me that they would send me to school. That was two weeks ago

That's interesting... If you go to their website, they have a section for CDL training in OH: http://schneiderjobs.com/search-driving-opportunities/details/141101

I'm wondering if it may be a pilot program for this area... I have a phone interview with a recruiter tomorrow @ 3:30 eastern. I will specifically ask him if this is available in VA. If you want, email me your phone # and the best time to call. It may be good to compare notes since we are starting about the same time... huntindoug at americaonline(AOL)dotcom

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I had the recruiter tell me you have to start with them within 4 months of completing school in order to get tuition reimbursement
