So, is the DOT physical required before you take the written test (for your temps)? If so, I will get my physical this week since I start CDL school in Jan.

At least in California, you need the physical completed in order to take the written exams for the learner's permit. This may vary by state, though.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I went to have my CDL physical last week. The Nurse Practitioner would not pass me due to new regulations beginning. She wanted me to have a stress test completed by my cardiologist. I had a mild heart attack 2 years ago, so now my BP is controlled by medication. Anyhow, my gripe is that if my cardiologist thought I should have a stress test, then he would have scheduled one. So the new regulations are preventing me from attending CDL training because no physical, no CDL permit. I don't have the $2000 to $2500 to hand out for a stress test. Feeling more than bummed here.

This is the kind of stuff I was talking about when I started the thread.

There's a heck of a lot of discretion going on here.

And if your cardiologist gives you a clean bill of health - no reason for an ME to demand a stress test.

I also noticed recently - the questions about BMI/Neck Circumference are no longer on the latest forms on FMCSA's site.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Do companies/DOT examiners always request records if you've had surgery? I had an elective foot surgery in 2001. I doubt those records still exist since they usually destroy records older than 10 years.

Due to come out as a requirement the end of this month.

These questionnaires are A LOT MORE INVASIVE.

Questions like - have you ever had a broken bone? Have you ever spent a night in a hospital? Anxiety, depression, nervousness, other mental health problems? Have you ever used or do you now use tobacco?

Also includes question on neck circumference and BMI.

Looks like they're looking to REALLY COMPLICATE medically qualifying to drive. And are going to require a LOT MORE DOCUMENTATION for drivers that answer in the affirmative to some of the questions.

Leave it to our government to scare and enable a dime store NP/bureaucrat to overrule a cardiologist.

I would assume (perhaps incorrectly) that all certified examiners would have updated forms, right? I just took my DOT physical yesterday and passed. I'd hate to go through the hassle and expense of doing a second test. I do have a signed card from the examiner, which I just emailed to my company. On what grounds would they recall it?
