I used the search feature and mostly all I get is threads about CR England. Do you know a list of companies who have terminals in Western MA? I'm in the country, 20 minutes west of Springfield, MA. Other locations I can get to within reasonable distance would be Hartford CT area, Worcester MA area, etc.

It's not that I care about driving long distances, obviously I wouldn't go into trucking if that was a problem. But I'm thinking if it's within range of my home, I can get someone to come drop me off or pick me up with my truck, so I don't leave it unattended in a parking lot. It also allows you a little bit more time at home if you don't have to drive two hours or more to get back to your truck.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

PS I was also wondering if I could drive myself instead of takin the bus or train, when a company hires me and I have to go away for some time for training. I'd like to be able to have a vehicle to move around when I'm there.

Oops....following:

I'm asking because the CDL school told me that sometimes when pure done training, you might actually be given your truck to drive back home with a load...

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

Companies like Schneider, Prime and such don't have terminals in New England? Or is this list only giving you the home base/headquarters of the company?

These are companies headquartered in Mass. You might need to ask a recruiter if there are terminals, and/or drop yards there.
