CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

If you were an equipment operator or transportation in the military, you can have your license grandfathered in. You'll still have to have a DOT physical performed and take the written exam but not the actual driving or skills test. There are several companies that cater to veterans and every company appreciates those who have served, some just offer a few more perks. Each company is different in what they offer so research will be your best friend and if you search on here, you'll find listings for just about anything you need.

Welcome to TT and from one veteran to another, thank you.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I am by no means a recruiter for Schneider, but when I read this on their website I stopped looking at other companies:

"Schneider has been committed to those who serve for 80 years, and our new Credit for Military Experience Program takes that commitment to new heights. If you served in the military, we’ll reward you with higher starting pay.

•If you drove a truck at some point during your time in the military and were discharged in the last 12 months, or are actively serving in the Guard or Reserves*, 100% of your time served will be used as Schneider driving experience credit towards pay and benefits. •Example: 4 years military driving experience = 4 years Schneider driving experience

*Must meet basic driver qualifications and have qualifying Primary Specialty

•If you served in the military in a non-transportation capacity and were discharged in the last 12 months or are actively serving in the Guard or Reserves, 25% of your time served will be used as Schneider driving experience credit towards pay and benefits. •Example: 4 years military experience = 1 year Schneider driving experience

*Must meet basic driver qualifications"
