Looking into getting various things in order for driving and I know one of the big things is a passport. Is it necessary to have the passport book or will the passport card suffice? I read that the passport card will grant you re-entry into the US from Canada, Mexico, and a few other places but will this be acceptable for CDL purposes? The passport card is about half the price of the book, so don't want to have to spend the extra money if I don't really need it.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Maybe it was just my companies requirement, but I was told for CDL , the book is required. The school/company you are going to, should be able to answer that.

A passport is not required as part of your CDL. Some companies run to Canada or Mexico and if you cross the border you have to have one. If you stay in the US (lower 48 states) then you don’t need one. I got a passport card because it’s cheaper and good for land travel by roadway or sea travel. I ran canada alot at Roehl. Wasn’t bad but can be a pain at times. Worst part I found was our own customs agents were the biggest pain coming home.

Thanks for that PJ I figured that the card would be sufficient enough. I’m looking to maximize my potential without spending unnecessarily. The card is WAY cheaper than the book

I agree for just going into Canada then the card is all you need and much cheaper. I actually got both the book and the card but that is simply because I like to travel to other countries so the book works better for me.

Going to add my 3 cents on this since I have gone to Canada more times then I can count. I have a passport card and have never had a the passport book. The passport card is cheaper by at least 1/3 the price of what the book would cost. It is easier to travel with in my opinion because it is a thick plastic card that you wont have to worry about getting wet. When I first started I was told to get my passport book but the trainer in my truck told me something completely different. He has been working for that company for 9 years at the time he was training me and he had never had to use anything other then the card. In my experiences over the last 12 years I haven't had the need for the passport book either but if you ever want to "FLY" into Canada or outside the USA (Europe, Asia, another continent, etc.) you will need it to get on a plane.

I'm in the process of getting my passport renewal completed now. The last three times, I had the booklet, but this time I'm just getting the card. I don't anticipate flying out of the country any more, so saving money by just getting the card. 69 foreign countries is enough for this lifetime.
