I'm looking at 3 schools in SoCal. (if you can recommend any other [good hopefully] ones, that'd be more than appreciated)

Toro, Dootson, and American Trucking.

Toro has bad reviews, but can I pass and get a job? That's what I care about. Dootson/American seem like their reviews are fake so...

Tips on figuring out which one I should do?

Also, how long is my license good for, before it goes bad, do I have to renew, etc. in case I decide to take an extended break (maybe go back to a college for 2 years) before I start applying as a truck driver.

Nruck thinks this is real:

"Everybody" gets bad reviews. Mostly the only people taking the time to post "reviews" have a beef with the company.

Is it ended their fault? Noooo. It's always the incompetent instructors of the sadistic dispatchers that make everyone's life miserable.

Nruck, read most reviews either with lots of grains of salt, or better, popcorn & read then for entertainment.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

That's what happens when I don't proof read my copy!

Actually around the Anaheim area would be perfect.

Did you go through their program?

How much does it cost?

Yep I went through their program about 3 years ago. there main office is located in Anaheim. They have 2 locations one in 29 palms, and one in Oceanside. I went through the school in 29 palms while I was in the service so I didn't pay out of pocket but if I remember correctly the cost was around 4,500. I would go to their website and check them out or give them a call. great school.

Stay away from Roadmaster in Fontana.

The instructors are great but the office is a nightmare.

-will not return your phone call. I called and left 8 messages on the directors voicemail and 4 months later she finally called back. But only because she heard I was in orientation with a company not named Werner.

Front office lady told me 5 times that "I mailed your packet today" but it was weeks later that the director said "I mailed your packet today" and then I finally got it weeks later after Roehl called theit corporate office for it.

Again I have nothing but positive things to say about the instructors. Most are retired military and I liked them all. But once the office has your money they will forget you exist.

I can't afford that unfortunately.

I can only afford $2,000 MAX, and that would probably include gas driving to a cheaper school that's 5x farther away.

It will be tough to find a school that can train you for 2,000, I think a company that provides company sponsored training might be your best bet. good luck to you.

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.
