Best Place To Check Out A Truck Interior?

Alright. I've done a bunch of research, I'm getting close to signing up for training. One last thing: before I go through school and pay money, I want to go sit inside a truck. Before I make the commitment to live in a truck for much of the time, I'd like to sit in one so I can get a sense for what it will be like.

I don't know any truck drivers personally. I live in Wylie TX, which is NE of Dallas. What's the best way to do this? Maybe go to a dealership? Anyone live in the DFW area willing to let me check out their rig?

I would say the best way to see one would be at a dealership. There are a also a ton of YouTube videos showing interiors but obviously that's not the same as sitting in one.

You could also try talking to the school you want to go to and ask them if it's ok for you sit inside one of theirs just so you can get an idea if it's something you want to do or not. Sometimes they'll even let you watch other students practicing at the discretion of the student.

I went to a dealer today and checked out several trucks, most notably 2 'condo' sizes; the Freightliner Cascadia and International Prostar. Both had plenty of headroom while standing, and a bed long enough for my 6'6" height.

A Volvo I tried wasn't wide enough for me to lay down.

Now I wonder what the odds are of me getting a condo size truck as an otr or regional driver.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Seldon, that entirely depends on which company you go to work for. Schneider issues 10 speed Freightliner Cascadias. Prime issues lightweight trucks and you'd be a little uncomfortable at your height. The roomiest trucks are the Internationals and the Freightliners, as you disvovered.

Obviously when choosing a company to work for, you're going to need to rule out companies which issue Volvos and LW trucks (Prime) from the get go, but you will still have a ton of companies to choose from.

If in doubt about their equipment, simply give a company a call and ask.

Just as an FYI, the LW trucks at Prime are the same width as a full sized Freightliner, just a much smaller sleeper (length not width).
