I was gone for 3.5 months school/OTR training, then went straight to another company as an "experienced" driver into a dedicated home daily job as they considered my time in school and training 3 months experience which was the prerequisite.

I don't get paid as much but I am home with my son every day... almost. There are situations where you might not make it home but in the last 6 months I have only not made it home twice.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Your reply immediately caught my interest! I've been on the road for about 6 months incl. training. I would like to know what company you work for. I need to be home more often and your job sounds perfect ! I am located in Savannah, GA.

Have you by chance visited that school, spoken with any of their students, or spoken with any trucking companies about being hired after graduating from that school?

I can't find hardly anything on that school. I don't have it in our database, they don't seem to have a website of their own, and I don't see a listing in Paducah. I don't even see it in Google maps.

For everyone out there - make sure you read through our articles on How To Choose A Truck Driving School so you know how to evaluate them and find one that suits you well. I'm not saying it's a bad school or anything. That's just it - I don't know. I can't find much on them other than it says they've been around since 1993. So I don't know what the deal is but make sure you do your research.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Yeah, there's no way to tell from the website. It's obviously owned by the same people that own the other website - they're equally awful and have all of the same links and graphics and stuff smile.gif

Like I mentioned, make sure you read through our articles on How To Choose A Truck Driving School but the two biggest things are:

1) Go to the school for a tour from the staff and make sure you speak privately with several of their current students. Catch em before school, at lunch, or after school lets out. Believe me, if the current students paid good money to attend that school and they're not happy with it, they'll definitely let you know.

2) Get a list of some major trucking companies that hire their students and then call a few of those companies yourself from home to verify it. If major trucking companies will hire their students then the school is legit. It doesn't mean it's going to be your best choice of course, but it's at least worthy of consideration.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Yeah, just have a list of a few different places that sound interesting if there are several close enough to choose from. Sometimes a place seems great until you compare to a place that truly is great. It's always a good idea to shop around a bit. Even if you find a place you think is perfect, there could always be a place that's more perfecter than the previous perfection. wtf-2.gifsmile.gif
