Finally getting my license tomorrow! Yeah! But...Can any anyone please tell me if the written tests for hazmat ("H" endorsement) and tankers ("N") are the same for the "x" hazmat/tanker combination or will I need to take a separate test for it tomorrow? (Already have hazmat and tankers passed) Thank you all in advance for taking the time to reply, your input is greatly appreciated!

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

That's right Julie, you'll take both the hazmat and tankers tests, and then when everything is finalized with your background check for hazmat, and you get that new license it will have an "X" endorsement on it.

There is no separate test for the "X" endorsement.

Just know that they won't put the X on your learner's, at least not in Virginia. You'll get the X after you get your real license. They will, however, put an X restriction on your learner's which means you cannot drive a tank with anything in it and it cannot have previously had Hazmat material in it.

I wish there was an edit button, I skipped the part where she said she'll get her license real soon. Well, for anyone in the future searching for this sort of thing, now you know.

Most DMV's will typically not even administer an HM test or do fingerprints, until AFTER you've already obtained a full CDL license.

I currently hold PTX endorsements (Passenger, Doubles/Triples, Tanker, HazMat).

The "X" endorsement is the combined HM/Tanker. You could get JUST an "N" endorsement, if you were just hauling food takers (milk, etc.), and never Haz.

Most companies are going to want to see Haz AND Tanker, as certain amounts of "portable tanks", hauled inside a trailer, require a tanker endorsement as well as HM.

The HazMat endorsement, is probably the most difficult test, as it covers more "specific knowledge" that has to be remembered for the test.

I drilled the High Road Training HM section for a couple of weeks, before doing my renewal a couple of years ago. 100% pass.

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
