I am trying to prepare to get back on the path to earning my CDL A and I was looking at the schools near me and the closest one [ the others are over an hour from me ] trains on a 6 speed that does not have the double clutch from what they told me. I was wondering is it a good idea to learn without it and later learn the double clutch cause I plan to go to a finishing program like prime has for when you need more training before going solo but I am worried the truck they have may come with restrictions on my license. Is it ok to test without the double clutch present?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Double Clutch:

To engage and then disengage the clutch twice for every gear change.

When double clutching you will push in the clutch, take the gearshift out of gear, release the clutch, press the clutch in again, shift the gearshift into the next gear, then release the clutch.

This is done on standard transmissions which do not have synchronizers in them, like those found in almost all Class A trucks.

Nick, I am leery of this school, because there is no such thing as having the double clutch present. Double clutching is a method of shifting that can be done on any standard transmission, it is not a type of clutch itself. Also you will be required to double clutch when you are being tested at the DMV. Also, if you are planning to go someplace like Prime, why even start out by paying tuition to attend a school when Prime will pay you to train at their school?

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Thanks for the fast reply old school.

I was a bit confused about them saying that but I wanted to make sure that there was not something I was missing. Sadly Primes beginner program was something I attempted and it was fine up to the point of me getting assigned to a driver. It did not work out sadly and I did not learn any thing while on the truck. Not for a lack of trying but the driver from how I saw it only wanted me in the seat. I drove when I was not learning but he wanted to enjoy netflix and he did not know the pre trip on his truck. I got off the truck but by the time I saw things were not going to work it was too late to get a new driver to train with. It set me back so I am worried to go away for another program.

From what they said it was not. Sadly in my part of new york there is not many schools. I know closest is not always the best but trying to find the best options.

Nick, New York trucking schools are notorious for being rip offs from what I have seen. If they cannot promise you a training certificate indicating 160 hours of training then don't do it. For a new inexperienced CDL holder that certificate is imperative for being able to get hired anywhere.

I realize you had a bad experience at Prime, but I think you just need to try it again. Prime has a way for you to contact somebody that can get you with a different mentor if there is a problem. Will they take you back?

Well I certainly was not a problem and left on good terms so I would hope they would take me back. Maybe I could try talking to them and see what my options are. I did not even know of the training certificate and I am glad you mentioned it and the hours needed. The schools hours they offer are not even close but that was another question I had. If I was to try for my cdl test would I need close to that many hours or can it be done in less then continue my training in a program? The few schools around me offer 13 hour and 18 hour courses .

That is the problem with those New York schools - they can't provide you with the certificate. What they are doing is fast tracking you into getting your CDL and then they help you get a job running through the boroughs in a box truck making hot shot style deliveries.

If you want to be an over the road driver you must have that certificate or else you cannot get a job. It is an insurance company requirement. If the companies cannot get you insured, then there is not way they can hire you. If you go back to Prime they will spend the proper amount of time with you to get you up to speed. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, that just happens sometimes. It was unfortunate that you did not know how to handle it, but if you return you can always consult with us in here and we can point you in the right direction. There are plenty of Prime drivers in here and even a few former trainers for Prime, so I know we could help you navigate your way to success over there.

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

I think it may be my best option at this point then spending the money and risking it. I imagine there is great drivers at Prime to help me and I just had bad luck but it does make me worry about going for another try but at this point I do not think I will get the training where I am. I just got to wait for the right time before I travel for training again. Thank you for your help Old School. I am glad I came here first before coughing up the thousand dollar down payment they wanted to start lessons.
