So, the job I'm looking at is Dedicated Truck Driver – Dollar Tree. It states "consistent miles primarily traveling in OR, WA, ID, MT and WY." And, pays "Mileage, stop-off and unloading pay"

"Eligible CDL Driver Applicants: •Experienced truck drivers •New Class A CDL holders"

My question is, is this a good starting job? They advertise for New Class A's. Or would someone only do this one after doing OTR for awhile first? I don't mind unloading. I need the exercise. But, I thought I read a story on here about a guy who started out on something like this and quit his job because of difficulties.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

From what I understand, Lots of tight parking lots. Need real good BACKING skills.

I attended orientation with a driver that left his previous company because he felt it was the only way out of a dollar tree dedicated job. For him, it was the driver unload portion. That doesn't mean you won't like it though. To each his own.

I've talked to a couple drivers doing the dedicated and really like it, home weekly, great pay, but the unloads are a real work out. They told me some of the racks have bad wheels, you have to park with end of trailer up hill, ( that is some times). The two I ask were, 1 dollar General, the other Family Dollar. Enough I don't want to try, that or flat bed. Call me lazy but I hung dry wall for over ten years and wish for something a bit easier!

On some of my searches I found a dedicated no touch home weekly if you live within fifty miles of Muskogee. That's my dream but none hiring in my zip.
