hey all, went to get the DOT medical exam from the nearest chiropractor's office. All good except my left eye was correctable only to 20/50. Saw my eye doc yesterday and have a new prescription coming. He offered to certify me as 20/40 correctable in the left eye. My question is, can the DOT physical examiner rely on the eye doctor's exam, or must I still pass the eye test in the DOT's examiner's office? thanks,

Sorry, but you'll have to pass the D.O.T. exam. You'll even have to pass it again when you get hired by someone.

Do they usually use a machine or the standard eye charts? I only ask because when I did my last renewal for my drivers license at the DMV there seemed to be a difference. Using the basic eye charts I was going to need to ware my glasses while driving, using the machine she said I passed with flying colors and I don't necessarily need my glasses while driving. All in all it really doesn't matter, I usually wear them when I drive anyway. I just don't like being told what to do. LOL!

I believe it's mostly because if you cover / close yours individual eyes, when you open them again it takes a while to focus. Using the machine you basically keep both eyes open.

Jim, I've seen it done both ways, but typically I think it's more common to use the standard eye chart.

Thanks!

I have an eye exam next week with my health care provider so I should know if I'm good to go before heading over to the DOT exam.
