HOS is one of those things that is sometimes difficult to grasp before you actually put it into practice and "see it" as a driver. Even then, if you are on electronic logs , much of the "thought process" is done for you. Try not to sweat it, do the best you can to learn it and understand how it works. Once you are in road training after getting your CDL , it will make way more sense than it does now.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Electronic Logbook
A device which records the amount of time a vehicle has been driven. If the vehicle is not being driven, the operator will manually input whether or not he/she is on duty or not.

My point is, all this business about 14 hours, 8+2 hours, 10 hours or 30 minutes really is crazy. But once you start living by those rules you'll be able to tell what's going on just by looking at your watch.
