Old School instructs:
If you only managed to do 5 or 6 hours driving during that 14 hour limit, (which starts when you went on duty to do your pre-trip) you will not be able to drive again until you have taken the appropriate break.
Keep in mind you can start a 10 hour break at any time. Suppose you start your day at 0600. By noon you have driven 5 hours to the shipper. (14 hour clock has 6 hours, 11 hr driving clock has 5 hours.)
The shipper informs you the shipment won't be ready till 0100 tomorrow morning. That is 13 hours away. Go find a parking place and take another 10 hour break. You'll be ready for a whole day of driving when you pick up at 1am!
(This 13 hour delay happened to me this last week. And that's what I did!)
Old Rookie supposes:
But... you can "pause" the 14 hour clock, right... Old School?
That's the one you can't stop. Once you punch in to start your pre-trip, you must stop driving 14 hours later. (See the thing above - a 10 hour break anytime resets all your day clocks.)
The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.
Oh, yeah. There's the "split sleeper" 8 hour gambit murderspolywog brings up.

You can only pause the 14 hour clock by going to the sleeper for 8 hours. Then you get what ever you have left on your 14 and 11 hour clocks back. Then do 2 hours off duty or sleeper and you get what ever you used back from the start.
