Yes.. the routes are for fuel mileage and tolls. I mostly stick to mine and get $50 to $100 per week in fuel bonus.
We also get messages "you are entering AR and there is a bridge with a weight restriction on HWY 63. Take I55 to US 60 instead". That sort of thing. After while you start running to the same customers and same roads and learn them.

Not to mention, most companies have bonus plans for fuel mileage. Deviate too much and run a bunch of out of route miles and you'll kiss that bonus goodbye.
