Instead of going through company paid training I'm going to get my cdl from a college in my state. Will most companies except this or no?Just curious about how this would work.Planning on going to Swift in December but would rather go this route because the state I live in is really messed up about their rules lol

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I went to a private school for my CDL , and the school had a list of companies that hire from that school. We had several recruiters come and speak during class. Find out what companies hire from your school. If you have a particular company in mind talk to a recruiter and find out if they hire from that school.

Chris is right - ask the school for a list of major carriers that hire their students and then verify this yourself by calling a few of them from home. And of course if you want to work for Swift you should call Swift and ask them directly.

If it's a school at an actual college of some sort those programs are usually great. You'll want a minimum of 160 hours of training. That's what most companies are looking for.

But ask them for a list of major carriers. If there's a pretty good list then that school should be legit.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I'd call Swift directly as suggested.

But also keep in mind that most County/State College programs have to be accredited by the Dept of Education, and typically EXCEED the hours/requirement of most "for profit private schools".

Most trucking companies are looking for 160 Hours at an accredited school - most full-time VoTech/College courses are 300+ hours.

The one I took at McFatter VoTech (county school system) was 320 hours, and 1,000 road miles. Took 9 weeks full time - but was pretty well rounded.
