Hey I'm interested in getting my CDL and I was curious about DWI's on my record. I haven't had one since 1999, but I was wondering if this might hold me back. How far back do they check for offenses, just curious. Thanks Joe

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

And Joe as far as DUI'S go , the go cack 10 years on your driving record, good thing for me also cause when i was younger I got 2 , Im not or was a alcoholic , just made stupid mistakes, To my understanding (anyone can correct me if im wrong)ITs the company itself that you apply for, if they take ppl with DUI's

Iv come down a long road allready to have this held against me, Iv went thew the WIA program that has allready payed for my school, got my permit and no one has held this against me yet. Mine were in 91 and 93 , I used to like going clubbing and thought i was great to drive, now i know better , I went 10 yrs without licences cause i couldnt afford the sr22 (3.500 a yr) Got my dl back in 2001 and have not has as much as a parking ticket.I charrish my DL now.

Yes Brett,I am studding the Pre-Trip Inspection ,Driving Exam, Logbook ,and Weight & Balance.

When the instructor ask a question , I plan on raising my hand everytime lol

Like i read in your book , I wanna finnish at the top of my class so I can get on the road soon.

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.

Hey Sam....CONGRATS on your success !!!! And I'll give you a little help with your spelling..atleast on the internet. If you use Google Chrome for your browser, when you misspell a word ANYWHERE, it will underline it in red, you right click on it, and there will be a list of "right" words..the top one is usually the correct one !!! So that will help some. Now get back to studying...we want to hear ya hollar when you get that CDL !!!

Thanx Star , After investigating this I found out it's not installed. I had to install it .

Now I have the confidence to wright a blog of my travels in school.

Question: I'm wondering if I will have home work , school is from 8 am till 5 pm and a 27 mile drive in heavy traffic at that time of day. it'll probably be 6 before i got home everyday,so not much downtime.

Yes, most of the time you'll probably have at least some studying to do.

Keep in mind...in trucking you can be on duty 70 hours every 8 days. That's almost like having two full time jobs. On top of that, a lot of the things you'll have to do you won't be doing during those 70 hours. So your "official" days may add up to almost 70 hours a week, but the "unofficial" work and other stuff you'll be doing (showering, laundry, shopping for food & supplies, waiting on repairs, etc) will be on top of that. Very, very long days....one after another after another often for weeks at a time. So prepare yourself for that mentally because it's coming. And then add all of the stress, erratic sleep patterns, change of lifestyle, and time away from home & family to all that and you have one heck of a challenge that lies ahead. It's totally doable, which is a good thing because it's unavoidable, but very difficult on everyone that's new to the industry.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
