Hi there Everyone,

How are we all doing? I haven't posted here in awhile. Next week I will be with Farner-Bocken for 4 months. I haven't seen a pay raise yet though so not sure what to do. Is there anyone out there that has or is dealing with Schneider national? What are they like? Wonder if it be worth my time to look at prime again now that I have 4 months.

Take care,

Ben

4 months isnt very long. Not nearly long enough to learn your job well or be an asset to your employer instead of a drain.

I dont know about Schneider, per se, but most companies want you straight out of cdl school or some will take you otherwise with a minimum of 6 months verifiable OTR experience, but even more companies might see you as a job hopper?

Is there something grossly wrong with your current employer? The best advice is to stick with them for at least one year. Ive learned in this business that longevith with a company gets you better pay and perks. Going somewhere else puts you back at square one.

A friend from my cdl school went to work for the company i work for. He complained.. A LOT. He thought (wrongly) that after 3 or 4 months OTR he was going to get a high paying local job. I tried to warn him.. I really did but he quit anyway. He quit BEFORE he had another job. Oh but he said it was OK as he had 3 interviews lined up.

He couldnt find a job for OVER 5 MONTHS. What he finally ended up with was a local class B seasonal job that will be ending or severely limited during the winter months. Its delivering for a small lumber company. He will most definitely be seen as a job hopper and will have a very difficult time being seriously considered for a class A job without going back to school again. Oh well.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

STAY PUT! Give it 1 year minimum. If you jump ship now it will hurt you in the long run.

I echo Tractor Man: "STAY PUT!". First, if you moved, you'd be starting over on that career ladder. Second, the real people to ask are either your DM or Payroll. They won't laugh, since nearly everyone could use the extra green, and raises are pretty much an automatic formula, sort of Time on job x miles - chargeables = your raise

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
