Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any experiance with live feed dash cameras. I wanted to get one mounted to my truck once I become a company driver for prime. I want to do this because for my fiancee because when she needs to go back home I want to be able to still let her enjoy the sights and ride shotgun with me. I was thinking a mobile Hotspot through my cell network then a WiFi camera? But I'm not exactly sure if that would work. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to advise. Big big important thing to note though. I am currently no laptop I need to wait till I get the job at prime to save up. I have a tablet and Android smartphone.

I'm taking the quiet as not much experience with the cameras....

I would think the data charges would be prohibitive...not to mention the continual connection problems. However, with that said, I've never tried it so there may be a way...good luck and let us know if you get it working!

I would guess you would need a huge amount of data on your cell plan. Another option might be to record to a memory card on the camera then upload it to her at the end of the day via email. Don't forget to narrate. :)

I don't think we've had anyone mention that they're live streaming their dashcam. It would indeed get pretty expensive rather quickly though. I think Brian has the right idea. You might consider recording your footage and then editing it so you only keep the highlights and then upload that to YouTube.

There are a million far less expensive (or free) ways to live stream your current location, altitude, speed, and heading through GPS to the Web so people can see where you are at any given time. But I'm not sure about the prospects of live streaming a video feed. Honestly, 98% of the time there won't be anything interesting to see. That's why I think live streaming your current GPS location and then uploading highlights of the camera to YouTube would be a good option.

Ok, yeah I never really took data charges into account. The record then upload might be cheaper and better. I just need to buy the camera and laptop lol

This may be to many hoops to jump through:

As an amateur radio operator you can us Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) to stream your GPS location via your 2 meter mobile radio. Your wife can track you by following your call sign at aprs.fi.

APRS is also a very robust messaging system an can be used to send and receive messages even if you have no internet or cell phone connectivity.

You can also use your amateur radio to connect to the Winlink system where you can send and receive email, again without the need for internet or cell phone connectivity.

Although neither APRS or Winlink have the speed or bandwidth to send photos or video, you could use them to stay connected when other methods are unavailable. And APRS is a very effective near-real-time method of streaming your location and sending/receiving messages.

Also, there is a free app called Glympse that the two of you could download. With it, she can get a real time look at where you are on the road. It's kinda like a duo GPS...she can see a blip on a map that represents you and the highway on which you are running...it's not a video feed where she can see what you see, but it can give her an idea where you are. You can also time it so that it stays running from 15 minutes to over an hour at a time, possibly more. Not sure how much data it will eat but I don't think it would be much. Pull it up at the app store for Apple or the Google store for Android and check it out if interested. Keep us updated what and how you do whatever you do...be safe and God Speed!

Reaper...I understand and empathize with your desire and need to keep your significant other in the loop. Honestly I do. Please remember your primary focus is learning your job and safe operation. Making commitments beyond that single-minded focus can possibly add unnecessary stress and distract you from what is most important.

Although I don't know you, experience has taught me and others on here that when learning this job up to possibly the 3-4th month after completing road training, that's about all a person can handle; the learning curve. I suggest you keep a realistic perspective and try not to over extend and over commit before you really know what to expect.

While I was training and for the first six months I made one call per day to the GF...that was it. I completely cleared the deck of any and all distractions. Not trying to be a stick in the mud or a downer, just trying to ground you a bit and realize your live feed might be more of a future consideration and not an immediate need.

Good luck.

Hey guys town, no no I am dedicated to driving truck and I am more than ok with being alone and secluded solo otr. But it was more for my fiance, I figured until late 6 months into my career (I want to wait 6 months to let her into the truck for my company and my own benefit so I can focus on learning and not getting as lost.) She already knows I don't plan on being home until prime tells me I need to go home for some home time lol. Her and my goal is to eventually not have a home and live in the truck so we can lower our costs and enjoy exploring the country and experiencing the most important job in the world.

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
