I got my CDL Class A a few days ago and applied to a bunch of places. I narrowed it down to Prime and J&R Schugel. Both can get me into orientation in early January.

Anyone know much about J&R Schugel? I like they do dry van and reefer as opposed to Prime but I always hear Prime is one of the best places for a new CDL holder to start at.

Still debating between these 2 and they want to know by tomorrow.

Thanks

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dry Van:

A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.

Lots of PRIMATES on this forum. They seem teal happy with their choice. Also, one of the highest cpm. They seem to be getting good miles also. I will cast the 1st vote for Prime.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

Mr. Tractor Man, WHO needs to use the preview button? Lol

Yes I'm "TEAL" happy at Prime. But what is it about the other company that interested you? What is important to you? I will answer any prime question to the nest of my ability. And for the record, if prime made an offer, they will take you anytime. They have weekly classes forming every Monday.

And welcome to the forum

I like that I won't have to do another physical and I heard Prime sends people to Concentra for a physical in Pittson (where they would be sending me). I failed the physical at Concentra one time I went there and passed it at another place when I got a second opinion.

I like that JR also does dry van on top of reefer. Downsides of JR are restricted on tollroads, they don't run all 48 (I want to do OTR to travel) states, and no pets (I do have a cat).

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Do u know for sure you'd be at Pittston? I went to Springfield from NJ.

We do lots of dry runs in our reefers. I don't really see much if a difference. I run alot of beer, oil, peanut butter, pretzels, all dry. We don't touch freight, just takes a minute to set the reefer temp and fuel. Not much to it.

I have a cat on board but Prime has a $1000/pet fee. They take $300 from your check as the first payment then $50 per week.

In a year I have driven all but WA, OR, MT, ND, SD. So..yeah I have seen a lot.

Hope this helps. Sounds like you already made a decision, just concerned bout the physical.

If its a problem you can stabilize it...then do so a month or two before you get there. You might want to ask ifnthey could give you a temp card, say for two months, the. Get another physical. They did this with me to take the sleep apnea test.

Good luck.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

Heather from recruiting said I would be sent to Pittson.

The reason I failed the physical is I have a slight tremor in my left hand. They wanted me to see a neurologist but I could not afford that, even with health insurance.

He's going to Pittston because he already has his CDL. My recruiter from Prime told me I would've gone to Pittston too after trucking school, once I already had my CDL. You automatically go to Springfield for their CDL school if you don't have a CDL.

Hmmm..interesting. My class had a "group" for CDL holders and a separate group for those who came with their permits.
