I start orientation on Friday at Werner and very nervous about it because have not driven a truck in over a month. I am not sure what to expect at orientation and that I am a new driver.

Just remember with ur trainer that is his truck and keep ur things tidy and neat. Nerves are common once you get ur own truck drive it and the never will soon go away stay away from lease purchase they are not designed for the driver to get ahead of you get tired pull over and when you are in control of the truck weather u r with a trainer or not if you don't feel comfortable doing something don't do it final judgement comes from the person behind the wheel not the trainer he is there to give you tips and show you how to do things and the use of the ELD aka Qualcomm driver net xatia ect.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

Congratulations. Werner has some nice trucks. Also, I heard them in the radio the other day with an advertisement that said if you go 6 months accident free with them, they give you a brand new kenworth. Pretty good deal there.

I imagine the first few days will be paperwork, and safety, going over the company policy. Then they'll move you into either a full on road training period or a modified training period which is shorter.

Either way. Don't be nervous. Embrace it and enjoy it,.take it slow and take it one day at a time.

Thank you, I am just so nervous because I would have like more time behind a wheel then what I got at my school. I did get my CDL thanks to the school but I feel like I should have more time driving and backing up.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I worked for them for a while on a dedicated route in San Antonio Texas.

I enjoyed it but moved to another state.

They will work with you and they are a good bunch of people. I had a nice Kenworth. Though it leaked sometimes when it rained.

Its ok to be scared. Fear keeps you from doing dumb stuff... somtimes.

Just listen, learn, write down things and ask alot of questions.

Dedicated Route:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."

Then let you're trainer know that u feel u need to hone ur reversing skills start small straight line then as u get more confident slowly work ur way into an ally dock and the harder stuff. When u are at a truck stop sitting there ask ur trainer to show u how to do this I used to do it at the petro on i81 Scranton PA or the TA in Lodi Ohio due to the size of the parking lots there. The petro at stoney ridge Ohio is also a very good sized lot or hell better yet at any if Werner's terminals

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

EVERY Rookie feels the same way. Truck Driving Schools teach you to pass the State Driving , Pre-Trip and Skills tests, that's about it, it's normal. You learn to hone those skills when Werner sends you out with your Road Trainer. You'll be just fine!

Hey Driver-

I drive for Werner now on a dedicated account out of St George. I really like it cause I get home weekly to do my reset. They have taken care of me, have a few months under my belt before I switched over to them. On top my CPM , unload and stop pays I get my Post 9/11 GI Bill. They also gave my a brand-new Cascadia. Where are you doing your orientation? Just like any other "training evolution" if things are not going right with your trainer request a new one, if he/she is not showing you the ropes and helping you out....get a new one.

Werner has Simulators and CWM (Close Quarter Maneuvers) so if your skills arent up to par ask for training.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

I drive for Werner and up until recently was a trainer for them. What you are feeling is normal. Orientation will last a couple of days. You may have to wait a bit for a trainer. Some terminals have trainers come through them more often than others.
