Hi everyone! I posted a while back asking for advice about the different training options, and I thank you all for the advice. I've decided to go to my local community college amd take their CDL course. I'm also riding with a friend this week back and forth from Birmingham to Houston a few times in his beautiful KW. It's nice, and quite helpful in my opinion to get this look at driving, dropping trailers, fueling, sleeping in the truck, showering at Love's, and all the other minutiae that makes up a day. I'd recommend doing this, if possible, to anyone thinking of becoming a truck driver.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

What factored into when you chose the school? I have a choice of 3 local ones- one has the features of a driving simulation- somehow that calls to me. Pices vary because of extra features here. I just wonder what you considered in making your choice.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I think if more poeple did that we would have a much lower tern over, and maybe drivers would be more happy. I took my brother out over the summer because he was thinking about becoming a truck driver. After he went out with me he realized it was not for him.

Kat, the price was good at $1800 for a 6 week course, so I figured it would be pretty in depth. Also, I was told that upon graduation I'd almost have my choice of who to work for due to a lack of drivers nationwide.
