The equipment we drive costs our companies around $100k for the tractors and they are then allowing people with no experience to learn on this equipment. The least we can do is keep them presentable. I am not talking show quality, but it only takes a minute or two to sweep out a truck or wipe down the dash.
Clean equipment also tends to get less attention from the people in the inspection bays.
I did a truck recovery today and was embarrassed that they had me pick up a load with it. It didn't reflect well on the company or the driver. Thankfully DOT only wanted a paperwork check at the Port of Entry.
This is the stuff that separates good drivers from the rest and trust me your mechanics will inform higher ups if they come across equipment that is in bad shape.
Rant over.

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
