Josh, you're going to need to use a CPAP machine on the road and be in compliance with the requirements laid out in the regulations. You can't just sweep this under the rug and hope they don't find out about it. It is a federal crime to lie or purposely leave out information on those medical forms you'll be filling out.
We have a ton of information here that you can read. Check out our Trucking WIKI Section on Sleep Apnea
A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.
In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.
It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.
BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:
It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.
CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.
Josh, you know sleep apnea is no small thing. It's important to make sure you're getting the proper rest. There are a ton of truck drivers who make great money and have an awesome career while using a CPAP machine.
Now who knows, it's possible you don't even have it anymore. But it sure can be dangerous driving an 80,000 pound rig on public highways if you're not getting the proper rest. So you should get tested and go from there. It might cost you a little money for the testing and monitoring if you need it, but think of the consequences you could face falling asleep at the wheel.

Hello all! About 4 or 5 years ago I went to get a DOT physical and I stated that I had sleep apnea (i had no idea that was so serious to them) so I only got a 3 month pass with the requirement to go get another sleep study done. I never did and just moved on to something else. I am a veteran wanting to go to Swift driving school (free for vets). The first physical was in TN, but I'll be obtaining my CDL from Swift in MT or ID.
My question is: will that TN physical carry over and the DOT will be able to see it, or will I be fine getting my DOT physical in a different state several years later (without mentioning sleep apnea this time)?
Thanks for any help everyone!
CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
DOT:
Department Of Transportation
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
