Just curious since I am still 2 months out from even being able to start cdl classes. I had reached out to schneider so I could ask a recruiter some questions I had and the person that emailed me back said to fill out an application and someone would get back to me. I planned on applying with them when it gets closer but thought that 3-4 months ahead of time would have been to early. Should i just apply now or do you think I should wait until its closer? I don't want to waste anyones time by applying and not being able to do anything for so long.

Thanks

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I've been doing that for a few months now with SWIFT. They just make you resend your ap every month. Monday I will get my official start date for January.

I would say about 30 days out is a good time to apply. I am not sure about other companies but I am pretty sure at Prime the application is good and considered current for about 30 days before the need it updated and a new MVR ran.

MVR:

Motor Vehicle Record

An MVR is a report of your driving history, as reported from your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Information on this report may include Drivers License information, point history, violations, convictions, and license status on your driving record.

Great question. I applied to a couple places and got positive response when I went to prime but when I told them I did not want to start orientation till Feb they basically told me to call them back a month prior. Now when I went to maverick to apply they did all the background checks and mvr multiple times due to an issue I had then put me in for orientation in Feb as per my request and they will call me a few times between to stay in touch. I think I would say you can start applying as soon as you are qualified to earn your CLP.

Good luck, drive safe hope to see you on the road soon.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about a month before but wanted to make sure I wasn't wrong in my thinking.

Ive been in contact with 3 companies & all three are aware that I can’t start until March. 1 company is no longer in the running so I’m still talking with 2. We’re just clearing any hurdles that may come up now but I’m also prepared for the fact that any one of these could fall through & im back to square one. The thing is that, for me, it’s better to be prepared early & if anything negative happens, I learn the process better with each interaction with the recruiters. Good luck!
