The one thing you have to remember when you come to trucking is this.

You are a new guy with a new company and you will have to prove yourself to that company. Trucking is for the most part, when you are new, the time to prove to yourself and the company you work, that you want to be here and want to learn. Staying positive is essential! The desire to do a good job helps out also, but remember that every time you have a bad day, is an opportunity to learn about how the environment works. Hell I've been doing this for 12 years and I still learn new stuff.

I was in the Marines for 14 years and when I got out I started doing this. So I know what it feels like to be in your shoes. Trucking isn't easy BUT if you can survive in the military then you can do well in trucking.

Thank you USMC

I respectfully disagree with the correlation between military survival and trucking success.

I've seen it go both ways. There was a retired Army Sargent in class with me unable to pass the pre-trip and was sent home. We had a retired military driver assigned to our D.C. terminated for drinking. Another forgot to set his brakes, got out of the truck, realized it and was able to reenter the cab and get it stopped. Could have been disasterous. I could continue, but I think you get the point.

Can it help adjusting to the lifestyle? Definitely. Is it presumed that the mental toughness required in the military will help you succeed in trucking? Yes, I think it will. Military experience might reduce the chance for failure, but it doesn't guarantee "you'll do well".

People coming from a career in business, education, heath care, law enforcement or laborer (to name just a few) all have the same basic opportunity and chance for success. Previous work experience typically has little bearing on the potential for trucking success, short term or long term. Trucking is the great equalizer.
