Thanks, Schism! That's pretty much it. Our trailers are a bit different as we have a custom design regarding the extendible part, but the self-steer is the same.

With such a simple design, it's a wonder it has not been incorporated into regular trailer design to make it easier to handle them (or at least something similar).

Sure would make taking turns so much easier & backing into tight places.

You would certainly have to figure out a way to make sure people lock those tandems in before hitting highway speeds though. It would have some incredible advantages in tight areas - no question about it. But you certainly wouldn't want 3.5 million trucks driving around at 60+ mph with that system.

I was wondering about the backing aspect of it. I don't know how often you guys have to back into places with it but that has to be tricky, eh?

Tandems:

Tandem Axles

A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".

With the technology today, I would like to think they could come up with a system that would lock automatically at a certain speed.
