Good one Michael S.!
I lost a wallet when about 17. Replaced the SS card and put clear packaging tape over it. It's the only reason I still have it some 40+ years later. Was prepared to go get another one... even sussed out nearby SS offices. Offered to do so to J.B. Hunt. They said the one I had was fine.
It may be because they do the Onboarding remotely for this "direct to account" (Amazon) gig. I think they figured it was good enough for their purposes. Of course the card matched up with credit reports, background checks, etc.. No way to delam that one!
Wonder if they are now issuing more permanent cards!?!

Mine was a fishing "accident" around the same time...fell out of a canoe while floating a local river when the kids were little...we were going under a low tree limb and they scooted over to one side to duck under the twigs...
wallet drenched, I managed to dry out the card and thought "hey, packing tape will keep this all together"...anyways, I'll be heading to the local SS office and get a new one.

Unlaminated!?!? Oops, my original SS card was beyond recognition, so I got a replacement years ago and laminated it. Now, this works with the self laminating sticky pouches, not sure if it would work with heat laminated or not. I cut around the edges where I could see little air space along edge of card, the back came right off, but the sticky part on the face wouldnt. So, I just took a lighter and carefully heated the plastic side a little at a time, started a corner with a sharp knife, and very carefully and slowly peeled plastic away. Only a few little edges peeled paper, but didnt damage any important parts. Then I stuck it in the freezer for a bit to get rid of the stickiness on the card!
