Yes they did the same thing before I went to Prime. It is actually the clinic that is doing your DOT physical that is prescreening you. They will get some medical history and make sure there is nothing that will disqualify you before paying to bring you out to orientation. Perfectly normal.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Sheila, first of all welcome to the forum.
I want to first address this question regarding disclosure of your medical history...
Is it strictly legal?
Of course it is. The medical long-form is a federal requirement, that you must fill-out accurately and honestly before the DOT physical can commence. It's highly detailed requiring you to disclose everything being asked for. They must determine if you are "fit" long-term to safely operate a 72' long combination vehicle that can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Figuratively and literally, "it's a big deal."
We are all subjected to the same level of scrutiny as a pre-qualifier for hire and you must also re-qualify every year or every two years depending on conditions that require more frequent review. We've all seen drivers with experience Medically DQ'd because of new or worsening health issues. Second... it's highly recommended to invest quality time reading and studying the contents of the Trucking Truth starter links. The information contained in them will ground your expectations in reality, establish a good base of truthful and accurate information and enable a better understanding of what is required to pass the permit exams.
Here they are:
Good luck.

Hi, I'm talking to Wilson Logistics about signing on the their CDL school and driving for them. I'm told to expect a call from their Medical Insurance carrier who will ask about my surgery history among other questions. Is this a common practice? Is it strictly legal? Employers aren't supposed to ask, but by having another 3rd party company ask it seems like their circumventing the rule. If I admit I've had a surgery or have any condition that they don't want to cover due to "anticipated cost" I can be denied a job. Is this a common practice?
