Welcome, Tim. You take a written test to obtain a permit. Unless something has recently changed, TMC trains you to get your CDL. Are you sure that Dawn didn't say you need a CDL learner's permit?
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
I may be off the mark but I think it depends what state you live in to determine if cdl will pay for your training. I know they do for ky, Ohio, etc. but not here in Alabama, or Ga. Their site goes into specifics.

She didn’t specifically say the “learners permit”, I guess that’s what has me a little confused, I know what that is, just the written part passed... I’ve been study the written the past couple days, feel confident I’ll pass it and the DOT physical without much problem...

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Tim,

Tim,
See the link below to the Tennessee CDL page, which has information regarding obtaining your permit.
The High Road Training Program on this website is actually a better study tool than just reading the CDL manual.

Thanks for the link, I’d read it before, it does say “Iowa” CDL... As PapaPig stated, it’s different state to state... Nonetheless looks like my part, for now is to get a Tennessee CDL permit... Still waiting on a offer post background from TMC, can’t see anything that would red flag my background, been on my current job 15 years, clean DMV , no convictions!

Ok thanks, I’ll check The HRTP out, I’ve been using the DMV Genie on my laptop per a suggestion in one of the diaries...

I didn’t pick up which state you were from, are you in their eligible for paid training areas. It is different from their hiring area. Also, they may change it based on current needs without updating their site. Best bet, just call them back and clarify. That will take all the guesswork out. They are pretty straight forward .

Newby here, first post! Signed up on the forum and immediately received several offers for paid training, with TMC being the one I’m most interested in... I talked to Dawn Busick, assuming based on the info they received from the board they new I don’t possess a CDL... In reading post/diaries otb I noticed no mention of taking the written test... Talked with Dawn again and discovered I would need the CDL before entering the training program... I guess I should’ve asked more questions, now I’m unsure if they get me through the driving portion of obtaining my CDL or if they’re specifically just training me to operate their flatbeds... I’m working on getting my ducks in a row to take the written here in Tennessee, hoping that’s all I’ll need to get started training in their program...
