I just received word that I will be going to pick up a load with a trainer tomorrow. While waiting for the call, I have been watching youtube videos and anything to familiarize myself with the upcoming tasks. ie backing up, going downhills etc. I believe that our truck will be a newer Freightliner. are there any other instructional videos with Pro tips that you would recommend? Thanks Glenn

1. The set up for any backing event is the key to success.

2. Take your time and don't get frustrated.

3. GOAL (Get Out And Look) as often as necessary.

4. Backing takes a lot of repetition, so nobody is an expert after the first day, week, month...

5. Learn from your mistakes and try to remember what you did correctly and parts you need to do differently.

6. Above all else, don't hit anything!

Absolutely GOAL, like PackRat said. Trust your gut.

If you're not sure where you're at or how much room you have, Get Out And Look -- you'll spend a LOT more time on an accident report and with safety than even fifteen stops to be sure.

As you gain familiarity you should be more comfortable with wide open spaces and straight backs, so you likely won't need to get out so often there, but especially when you're in a truck stop with yours AND another driver's livelihood, ALWAYS be sure of what's going on around you.

For backing skills, check out a Youtube channel called My Trucking Skills. I used to watch this channel a lot when I needed help with understanding how to back. I like the fact that the guy that makes these videos shoots multiple angles of the back that he's performing and narrates the moves he's making as the cameras roll. He's made videos on most types of backs so you can look at a back you'll have to make the next day or later on, on Google Earth and have some familiarity with it when you need to do it
