Hey TT family, I just got my CDL permit and I’m weighting options on which company training program to go to. I’ve been contacted by USXpress, Stevens, Prime, and TMC. Prime is my top choice I’ve been hearing great things about prime for years. My step dad, brother, and other friends advised me to go to Prime. I read, on this site, that Prime only does urine testing. I was a heavy marijuana smoker for several years, I stopped consuming over a month ago to start my career path. While researching prime on a few websites, I read Prime also does hair follicle testing now. Can anyone confirm or deny that for me, if this is the case I might need to wait longer or find another company to start with.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

If you were a rastafarian-style smoker - you might even want to wait even 60 MINIMUM for a urine. And probably close to 6 months for hair.

I'm sure someone will chime in - but at last report, Prime was still doing urine.

I would even go so far as to go get a "send in test kit" - and do YOUR OWN TEST just to make sure you're clear. THC metabolites leech out fat cells, which is why it takes time to clear your system.

You could be shooting 10 oxy's a day - and drop clean 72 hours later. Hell - I was smoking crack 33 years ago - dropping for probation. Smoke until 6AM Sunday morning, drop clean every Wednesday @ 3PM - rinse and repeat ****il I quit - 3/17/89), and these were "send out to lab drops".

Weed is a WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY - and the potency of todays weed, well this ain't your good old Aculpoco Gold. It has WAY MORE THC - and stays with you WAY LONGER - especially if you are a heavy, wake-n-bake smoker.

Dropping hot is THE KISS OF DEATH - especially for a newbie.

MAKE 1,000% SURE YOU CAN PASS ANY DRUG TEST - BEFORE SHOWING UP FOR ONE.

My current student said they just did a urine test when he went through orientation a couple months ago.

They did a urine tests. The nurse said that's what they always do for Prime. Don't know if that's country wide though.

If Prime went to hair testing, they would do so company-wide.

Keep in mind - HAIR TESTING is not an "FMCSA/DOT ACCEPTABLE" method of testing - but will be sooner than later (as soon as they can figure out the details). For now - hair testing is considered a "pre-employment test" (not a DOT test), and failures cannot be reported to the FMCSA Testing Clearinghouse. But can STILL BE REPORTED ON A DAC - and will still virtually trash your chances of getting into the industry (or at least make it so difficult as to not be worth the effort).

Article on "Mandatory Hair Testing" in Trucking

Interesting Article On Hair Versus Urine Testing. It also discusses a "racial bias" - in that minorities FAIL MORE than other ethnicities - but not enough to indicate a "racial bias".

As I mentioned earlier - if you are not 1,000% SURE you can pass ANY TYPE OF DRUG SCREEN - DON'T SHOW UP AND TAKE ONE. Even if it means waiting it out until you are 150% SURE that you can. Even if it means PAYING FOR A TEST ON YOUR OWN.

There's a ton of obstacles than CAN be overcome to get into the driver seat - A FAILED DRUG SCREEN IS (99% of the time - especially for newbs) NOT ONE OF THEM...

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.
