After 32 years of driving large vehicles, 4 in the service and 28 as a city Bus driver. I decided to retire. But I'm only 54, so I've decided since I still have my class A CDL. I'd try and drive a Tractor Trailer.

This portal has already given me more insight into how to accomplish this.

My main concern starting out was should I go to private school or go for paid company training. I had already been informed that no company was going to hire an former bus driver without some form of training.

Reading thru the site I've decided that paid company training would be my best option, and for that I'm grateful.

I'm hoping to go thru all the info on this site to ease my transition. And hope to be out on the road by this spring.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
