You are correct. Under the new rules you have to take a course to get the HazMat endorsement.

Yes, under the new rules drivers getting hazmat for the first time need this class. Some companies who train offer this class. I know CFI does.

A guy I work with started CDL school the other week. He works at the railyard where our tankers get loaded everyday so he’s already had some experience. He wants to get into hauling fuel tankers like we do so he’s going to school. I told him he should go ahead and get his endorsements while he’s on his permit like I did which saved me a bunch of money. That was 14 years ago. He said he was studying for the tanker & double/triple tests but for the hazmat , he’d have to take a separate class at the driving school. Apparently when they changed the regulations back in February about needing to go through a CDL school (or training through a provider on their list), they also changed the rules for the hazmat stuff. You still have to go through the old process (background check, fingerprints and computer test) but now you also have to take this class. I haven’t been able to find much info on it for some reason but here’s a screenshot from a site that had some info:

Had anyone else heard anything about this? I mentioned it in another thread where someone was asking for info on becoming a new driver but I figured I’d put it out front here for the whole class.
