Slower Driver Hiring Effects On Company Trainers?

With companies being able to be more selective in who they hire as driver trainees, how does this effect the current company driver trainers?

Would I be correct in guessing most companies rank their trainers off different criteria and then as the number of trainees diminishes the top ranking trainers are the ones called on vs the trainers at the bottom of the rankings?

What an odd question. Why are you thinking about trainers? Thinking you will get the best one with fewer drivers being hired?

Packrat, I realize from reading through the forum and life's experience that you get a better return when your invested and dedicate effort in your own outcome. But yes, my thinking is if companies are going to be selective on their trainees they would also be selective on who will be training those trainees as well. If a person is a good driver candidate even with the economy not doing so well and freight slowing down the trucking companies would be interested in providing their best trainers to the smaller number of trainees walking through the door, and also for the person looking to start driving now might be a good time with the OTR trainers provided. I realize the classroom and pad trainers are good but like everything else there are people that have abilities to teach that are superior to others.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

There never seem to be enough trainers. With many companies it is not uncommon for new-hires to have to wait until a trainer becomes available. I'd imagine most companies are still trying to keep up with the demand for trainers. I could be wrong though. One of our resident trainers might be able to shed a little more light on the current trainer situation.

The best time to start training is today. Any day. Getting a great student or getting a great trainer is a crap shoot. Neither student nor teacher will know what is sharing the truck until it is actually happening. What starts on the first day seldom will be the same on day 30. Few are a perfect match, but the end goal for the student should be to learn as much as possible, as quickly as possible, and survive long enough to be assigned their own truck. That's when the finishing school really starts. Everything before that is just the basics.
