My youngest brother's $350k motorhome burned up Thanksgiving Eve. The fire department had never inspected a motorhome fire before and considered it arson. With it almost paid off it would be foolish for him to burn it up. He got a settlement for it and decided no more motorhomes and ordered the above trailer out of some place in Indiana. It's 47 ft long (longer than the containers I pull), has a ramp on the back end so he can take his three-wheel motorcycle in it and his pickup is a 1 ton that he uses in his roofing business.

Another brother that has his CDL went with to help drive it back. He said it pulled real easy and if he wasn't paying attention, wouldn't realize the trailer was back there.

This configuration is very doable and would be far cheaper than a used semi truck.

Yes that is a nice-looking rig and probably what we will end up deciding on. I would have to agree with my husband though, a matching tractor would really look cool. But after hearing the comments, it would seem more of a hassle to be worth it.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Yes, definitely get a heavy duty pickup, like one ton, and do the 5th wheel method. IDMTnGal, aka Laura, is spot on, as are all the other drivers who suggested this.

Just do us night driving truckers a huge favor and when you have your rig, get your headlights aimed professionally. This is not such a big deal with 5th wheel trucks, but the trucks that pull bumper hitch trailers can really be distracting at night with the beams pointing up.

Also, based on your photos, I’m nominating you for two Golden Globe awards for best picture.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Thanks BK and it seems that everyone is saying the same thing and wants us to stay away from the Mack. The headlights were another thing that I didn't think of and not sure if my husband thought about either. LMAO, no problem on the "globes" comment. After carrying these big boobs all my life, the comment you guys come up with are actually pretty amusing. To be honest, most of the nasty comments actually come from other women, if you can believe that. Anyway, be safe out there!

Tina and Dan, another option to look at would be Ford F550, Ram 5500, or Chevy 5500/6500 medium duty trucks in a chassis cab configuration. They offer options of 2wd or 4wd, different cab options, and come without bed. Then have a bed made by an upfitter company that is made for towing a fifth wheel trailer and is very customizable installed. They all use pickup based engines, utilize a majority of pickup parts, would come, with a warranty if new, and have better towing suspensions/brakes. Another option that is affordable regarding matching your trailer you buy is a vinyl wrap for the tow vehicle. They are less expensive than paint and you can change them out if you get another trailer. I see your out of the cities, Boyer trucks would be a call to make if your interested in a Ford product.

Hi Nuts, It is odd that you brought this up today because a friend was talking to my husband about the exact same thing last night. He told me about the idea when he came in from the shop and we both were on board with it. He knows of a company here in town that has done some wild truck bodies and they would be exactly what we are looking for. We are going to look into it for sure. Thanks again

I guess I'm going to be the odd man out here. I would say to go with the Mack. There are a ton of FB groups that feature Class A trucks pulling motor homes. Depending on the frame length you could even put ramps and tote the Harleys behind the cab. That opens you up to more living space in the camper, instead of having to worry about storage.

Thanks Rookie and nothing wrong with being the odd man out LOL Discussing things over the weekend, we are leaning in the direction of buying a 1 ton dually cab and chassis and a custom utility bed built for us. I think we could still use your idea of carrying the Harleys just behind the cab to leave more room in the trailer for living space. Let us know if that will not work.
