I know there’s not a one sized answer tot his but what are some good team driving companies to work for? Don’t want to be on the road 3 weeks at a time either. Looking at Covenant at the moment

15 months ago you asked about team only driving jobs. What became of those recommendations you received?

I can't think of another where you will see more than at an established nationwide company like Marten.

What can you say is holding you back from making more there? How long have you been driving and teaming at Marten?

I’m solo at Marten on a dedicated account and only make around $1200 a week. I’m frustrated

Okay, so how long have you been driving with Marten?

Regarding the company that went out of business, how long did you work there?

Greetings Joel,

Let me preface my statement with, I have never been a team driver outside of my initial training. Props to those that have the mental fortitude to pull it off. However, have you looked at companies like Estes Express Lines, Old Dominion, R+L Carriers, and other LTL companies like that? I previously worked at Estes as a "Regional/OTR Driver" and had met a couple teams from time to time. My understanding is they generally only stay out 5 or 6 days at a time.

Regarding Covenant, while I do not know much about them, but they are a successful company with many successful employees. I can only presume that it would have to be a pretty decent company in that case. However, like most things, your experience is what you make of it.

I hope those ideas help. Have a blessed day!

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

So just over a year total driving, and just five months with Marten. Now is not the time to jump ship for the greener pastures. I see several reasons why:

1. You're so new to driving in general that you still don't know what you don't know, yet. Things like how to maximize your drive time and HOS , dispatch quirks and tendencies, areas that are prone to slow freight.

2. The economy and supply chain are continuing on a downward trend and I predict it will continue for the remainder of 2023 or longer.

3. You haven't been with the current company long enough to prove your worth and how you are an MVP driver that gets the big miles and pay.

4. You only have Marten and the previous company to look at from your viewpoint. Why go somewhere else now (company #3) to start all over. You bring a thin resume of only 13 months, so nothing that's going to jump out at recruiters or management.

5. I would stay at Marten. Talk with your management team. How do I increase my value because I am deserving of the big miles and stronger pay. Maybe a different fleet or a different dedicated account may be all that's necessary.

I was all set to start at Marten once upon a time. The deal breaker for me was that I would not be allowed to park at a truck stop, one I have used for years, for my hometime.

I have no idea how much pay fluctuates between different fleets at Marten but our son's guaranteed weekly pay at Marten in his dedicated fleet is $1425. He made $82k last year and he made his 2 year anniversary there this week and made $1700 this week. In his two years he turned down one load that weekend dispatch tried to assign him on his day he was going off on home time. I would think the potential is there for you to make more if you can show you can prove to be reliable. Financially, Marten has been doing well.

Donna posted early in the year that she did very well at Marten last year, something like $100k, if I recall correctly.
